  • Photo taken in Fall of 2010. This shows a healthy Sycamore tree on the Property next to one on which I have 92 Sycamore trees struggling from a disease called Sycamore Anthracnose. The goal of the treatment program I have them on is to improve all of the sycamore trees in the following pictures so that they eventually look like this healthy one. The following pictures deal with the disease itself.
  • This is one of the Sycamore trees showing minor anthracnose problems. Some stunting of growth, less healthy looking than the first tree with some die back and infected twigs. Not quite as visible in this picture is the tell tale signs of 'witches broom'. I'll show you what that looks like in the next close up picture.
  • A closeup of another Sycamore tree on this site shows the 'witches broom' growth characteristics associated with anthracnose. This is caused by repeated death of new little branches as they get infected each spring and die. New growth sprouts out from the same location and may also die leading to a new sprout all coming from the same spot, looking like a broom.
  • Here it is getting really easy to spot the advanced distorted growth caused by the anthracnose disease. Leaves commonly fall frequently during the spring and sometimes all season, and then the tree releafs. The overall health of the tree suffers and if repeated year after year could subject the tree to severe decline.
  • The witches broom growth characteristics I was referring to are even more pronounced in this picture. Repeated leaf and twig infection causes them to drop from the tree. When this is repeated year after year, this causes severe growth deformity. You need to rid the tree of this repeated infection, then put the tree on a fertilization program to promote healthy growth. Over a few years of proper treatment and fertilization, sycamore trees can recover from this disease provided you catch it before the decline gets too bad.
  • Here you can see the Arbor Systems portle needles used to inject multiple mililiters of a fungicide into these sycamore trees to cure them of anthracnose. They are placed at approximately 5 inch increments around the entire tree.
  • Here is another tree setup for injection with fungicide with the Arbor Systems Direct Inject system using the portal needle. I have used the 3/4 inch length needle for this injection.
  • Pictured here in the Fall of 2010 this Sycamore tree is being injected with fungicide for the treatment of Sycamore Anthracnose. There are 92 sycamore trees on this site, all infected to some degree with this chronic disease. In addition the trees are being soil treated with a special mix of fertilizers and organic products to increase their health. If you have similar problems with your sycamore tree(s) contact me.
